About This Community
Ocean Township is more commonly known by its historic name of Waretown. Originally home to numerous sea captains who traded in the local timber industry, Waretown was also founded around the charcoal, peat moss, shell fishing and cranberry industries. Today only 3% of Waretown’s available 13,000 acres are developed, most of the land being preserved by the Pinelands Act. Waretown is a lightly populated area retaining many of the cultural attributes of the Pine Barrens. Local attractions include the Albert Music Hall, which celebrates the musical heritage of New Jersey, the Little Red School House Museum and Wells Mills Park, a hiking and recreation area with wetlands, pine barrens and bogs.
