Ocean Gate was originally named for the wooden trestle bridge that was built in 1881 across the bay, linking the town with Seaside Park and other beach resorts across the bay. As more and more people came through the town from the Philadelphia Railroad, they gradually acquired properties and built summer homes along the water. Today Ocean Gate is mostly year round residents and features a mix of houses with historic older homes, restored summer cottages and new homes as well. With over a mile of beach and boardwalk, this quaint town affords residents with opportunities for boating, fishing, crabbing, swimming and scenic walking. Ocean Gate also has its own elementary school, The Ocean Gate Yacht Club, an active historical society and a senior citizens club. A perfect town for families of all ages.
